OVO Foundation supports charities with £100,000 donation

8 August 2019

London, 8 August 2019 OVO Foundation, OVO Energy’s charity arm, is supporting five charities by offering a share of £100,000 for projects supporting OVO Foundation’s mission to give young people a better future.

The OVO Gives Back scheme is powered by OVO’s people, who nominated and voted for local charities for OVO Foundation to support through volunteering and a grant of up to £20,000 each. The donation helps charity partners tackle some of the most critical issues of our time, including: supporting young people talk openly about their mental health, fighting food poverty and campaigning for improved air quality.

This year OVO Gives Back is supporting: Clean Up Bristol Harbour, Off the Record, Square Food Foundation, Action for Conservation and British Lung Foundation’s ‘Clean Air for Children Monitoring Project’. As well as grants of up to £20,000 for each charity, OVO Foundation will match fundraising efforts from OVO employees.

Gaby Sethi, Head of OVO Foundation and CSR, said:

“This year OVO Gives Back is supporting more charities than ever before, giving staff even more opportunities to help out all year round. Over the past four years we’ve supported over 17 charity partners, invested over £350,000 in community projects, and hundreds of people from the OVO team have dedicated 1000s of hours to local volunteering. We’re really excited to see the projects come to fruition and make a difference in the local community.”

OVO Energy is one of Bristol’s largest employers with over 1,000 people working in the office. This month employees will celebrate OVO Gives Back month – when staff dedicate time to volunteering at a series of events in Bristol with our local partners. This includes litter picking with Clean Up Bristol Harbour, supporting the development of Off the Record at a ‘hackathon’ workshop and helping Square Food Foundation to reduce food poverty.

Hendrikus van Hensbergen, Chief Executive, Action for Conservation, said:

“It’s really exciting to partner with the OVO Foundation and we’re thrilled their generous staff will be volunteering with us in school workshops across London and Bristol, inspiring young people to get active in conservation. Grants like this make a huge difference to us as a small charity and it’s fantastic to join forces with a local organisation who support our goals.”

Harriet Edwards, Senior Policy and Projects Manager, British Lung Foundation, said:

“As part of British Lung Foundation’s work with the Clean Air Parents Network, they will work with OVO volunteers to set up pollution monitors in and around schools and playgrounds in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and London. The data they collect will help to evidence the impact of pollution on children and will be used to campaign for improved air quality with policy makers.”

Chloe Juyon, Founder and Trustee, Clean Up Bristol Harbour, said:

“Being part of the winners of the OVO Gives Back grant came as a complete surprise! Clean Up Bristol Harbour is about raising awareness on littering and plastic pollution in our waterways, especially Bristol Harbour. One solution to this problem is education. Thanks to OVO Gives Back and its employees, we are very excited to now be able to develop an educational programme to go alongside our litter picks.”

Liam McKinnon, Marketing, Communications and Digital Manager, Off The Record Bristol, said:

“OTR is absolutely delighted to partner with the OVO Foundation this year and place young people’s mental health on the agenda. OTR has been providing free and self-referral mental health support since 1965 and we are excited to be able to expand and develop our offer to young people thanks to amazing support from OVO. Thank you!”

Barny Haughton, Director, Square Food Foundation, said:

“It’s a privilege to have been chosen as one of the OVO Foundation’s charity partners for 2019-20 and to benefit from the support that a collaboration like this brings. Learning to cook isn’t just about chopping onions and making bread. Cooking brings families together, builds confidence, teaches skills and encourages cohesion at home and in the wider community. We look forward to working with the OVO Foundation over the next year to make a lasting difference to families in South Bristol.”
