This year’s OVO Energy Women’s Tour kicked off yesterday in Framlingham, Suffolk. The tour will see the world’s top female cyclists compete over five stages and for an equal prize fund to the men’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

OVO Energy announced their support for an increased prize fund earlier this year, during the  race’s launch in Parliament, land increased the Women’s Tour prize fund by €55,000, bringing pot from €35,000 to €90,000. Stage by stage, jersey by jersey, the Women’s Tour riders will receive exactly the same prize money as the men’s Tour of Britain.

Chris Houghton, CEO Energy Retail at OVO Energy, said: “Providing equal prize money in the men’s and women’s professional cycling is incredibly important to our values as a business. In the last five years, the Women’s Tour has step changed the racing experience for professional women riders, particularly as compared to other events around the world. The OVO Energy Women’s Tour is the most prestigious multi-day stage race in women’s cycling and I’m really excited for the racing to get underway”.

The 2018 OVO Energy Women’s Tour, which forms part of the UCI Women’s World Tour, will cut across the cycling heart of Britain, beginning in East Anglia, then travelling over five stages throughout Suffolk, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. A final day’s stage race through the Snowdonia National Park will see the Tour’s first overall finish in Wales.

Spectators at stage one (Worcester) and five (Colwyn Bay) will have the opportunity to not only watch the world class racing whilst soaking up the event’s electric atmosphere, but also the chance to try out Whisper ebikes. The public will be able to test ride the bikes on a closed circuit, located near the finish line, before the race arrives. Adult bikes, kids bikes and helmets will be provided, along with a team of experts on hand to help users with any advice they require.

In total 17 teams will compete in the 2018 OVO Energy Women’s Tour, including four British squads, Wiggle HIGH5, Trek-Drops, WNT-Rotor and Storey Racing, with the riders set to compete in the race and battle to succeed Kasia Niewiadoma as the OVO Energy Green Jersey. Amongst the riders hoping to get their hands on the green jersey are 2017 track world champion Katie Archibald (Wiggle HIGH5), Hannah Barnes (Canyon-SRAM) and Dutch powerhouse Marianne Vos (Waowdeals Pro Cycling).
