New solar partnership to power thousands of UK homes with green electricity

  • OVO signs a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with North Angle Solar Park, Cambridgeshire’s largest solar farm, supporting new build renewable generation in the UK.
  • North Angle Solar Park will generate electricity for 12,000 UK homes, saving 90,000 tonnes of CO2. This comes as new polling from OVO finds that three in four Brits support increasing investment in solar power in the UK.
  • With over 300 PPA contracts OVO aims to stimulate further growth in the renewable energy sector without the need for government subsidies, moving the UK further towards its net zero targets.
  • OVO launched Plan Zero, its sustainability strategy, in 2019 with the ambition of leading the transition to a zero carbon energy system and becoming a net zero business by 2035.

Thursday 5th June, 2025: OVO signs a new agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council’s North Angle Solar Farm to power 12,000 UK homes with renewable electricity, continuing its ambitions to make green energy an industry standard.

North Angle Solar Farm is the largest solar farm in Cambridgeshire powering 12,000 homes in total, saving a total of 90,000 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime. Supporting the region’s transition to renewable energy and furthering the UK’s target to reach net zero by 2030.

This move comes at a time when public support for solar power is high, with over three in four people (77%) backing increased investment in the technology. Nearly 80% also believe energy suppliers have a leading role to play in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions. Whether an energy supplier uses renewable energy sources is important for many customers, with almost one third (31%) placing it as a primary consideration when choosing a supplier.

The news follows the two-year anniversary of OVO’s decision to immediately end the use of market purchased REGOs – certificates that allow suppliers to claim their energy is green, without necessarily buying directly from renewable sources – instead focusing investing in true green energy through agreements with local generation. Changing this industry-wide practice could refocus UK efforts on decarbonisation of UK homes and renewable energy investment to save customers money on their energy bills, using and spending less.

Through its commitment to PPAs with renewable energy partners, OVO has helped support subsidy free renewable energy with PPAs from brand new renewables expected to power more than 65,000 homes in the UK in total, helping to incentivise small-scale, independent wind and solar farms by offering them an above market price for the electricity they generate.

Susie Leppard, Head of Renewables at OVO, said: “We’re committed to supporting renewable energy generation across the UK, striving to bring more renewables onto the grid and taking huge steps towards reaching net zero. Our new partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council’s North Angle Solar Farm supports new solar generation and we believe this technology has a key role to play in accelerating the UK towards a fossil fuel free energy system.”

Cllr Ros Hathorn, Chair of the Environment and Green Investment Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “As part of our efforts to work towards net zero, we have developed ambitious solar energy projects that are generating renewable electricity on buildings and land across Cambridgeshire. Working with OVO in the North Angle Solar Farm’s first year of operation has helped to secure a vital revenue stream that will support our front-line services.”

OVO aims to stimulate further growth in the renewable energy sector where renewable generation may not have been built without OVO’s support, moving the UK further towards its net zero targets. OVO customers can support building a greener grid and future by signing up to the Greener Electricity add-on.
